The following is an excerpt from memories written by Clayton Schexnaildre Sr.:

In order to train the needed new couples, priests and doctors we used to have a meeting every Sunday at one of the churches or at the seminary on Carrollton Avenue at which one of our priests, especially Fathers McQuade, Reshetko, Roppolo, Joe Bourgeois would make a presentation of a phase of the Sacrament of Marriage with a very lively discussion for a couple of hours after the talks.

A typical conference for the engaged was a presentation by a priest on Sunday afternoon and the following Friday night. Doctors spoke on Monday nights and married couples on Wednesday nights.

For content and organizational matter we also drew heavily on a program from the diocese of Chicago under the direction of a Father Imbrioski. Our Pre Cana and Cana movement developed into many things like the High School movement where a couple would talk at the various Catholic High schools, the Cana movement for older married couples, and a road show to various dioceses to help them develop a program of their own.

This was a wonderful time in our lives. A time when we “breathed pure air” with many other great unselfish people whose main focus was to preach about the wonders and blessings of married life. We who were fortunate enough to work in the development of Pre Cana and Cana were the real winners.

Marriage Tips from the Family Circle

Bulletin Insert:

What is it that sustains marriages in our day? What is it that couples are searching for in their married life that gets them through the rough times and suffuses their spirits in times of joy? According to Andrew Greeley, couples he surveyed whose marriages had lasted for many years had one thing in common: They prayed. Their intimacy in prayer had sustained their intimacy in marriage whatever life had brought them.
