St. Charles Borromeo School Grandparents' Club

NEWSLETTER 2009-2010

We have been associated with St. Charles Borromeo School since the 2005-2006 school year. Our goal is to do whatever we can for the school and our grandchildren.

The following is a list of some of the activities our club has been involved with.:

August - Welcome back Luncheon for the teachers. Our club provides chicken & sausage jambalaya and a salad bar and drinks. Desserts are provided by some of the members who help set up and serve.

August - We participate in the PreSchool Orientation for Parents and Grandparents. We pass out copies of our newsletter in an attempt to bring new members into our club.

September - We work the concession for the Masulla Play as a Fund Raiser.

October - The Annual Grandparents' Picnic sponsored by the school. Grandparents bring lunch for themselves and their grandchildren. Some grandparents make a picnic of it and set out a lunch on the grounds under the oaks. Others eat in the cafeteria with their grandchildren and some eat in the gym with their grandchildren. Different kinds of lunches are brought by the Grandparents. The Grandchildren let their Grandparents know whether they want a special homemade dish or Popeyes or McDonalds or Pizza, etc. and their Grandparents bring the food to the school. There is a small Prayer Service before lunch and the children sing special songs, etc they have been taught to honor their Grandparents. There is a photographer who takes pictures outside under the oaks. These photographs make a nice memento for us grandparents and our grandchildren.

The SCB school Boutique is a fundraiser the school holds in December. Our club sets up a concession stand to serve food to the workers and the customers. We serve chicken & sausage gumbo and hot dogs with home made chili and drinks and sweets provided by the club members. This booth was much appreciated by the other workers as they can't leave to get something to eat while manning a booth. It is also a great fundraiser for our club.

Our members volunteer to help with the Book Fair and many members help out in the Cafeteria with the school lunch program. We also help babysit for the children of the parents and teachers who attend the PTFO meetings.

During the 2008-2009 school year our club provided 2 healthy lunches for the teachers during their participation in the "Faithfullness to Fitness Program".

I n February we provide and serve the Teachers' Appreciation luncheon in the Borromeo room. For this luncheon club members provide all the food (members send a dish or two if able to do so) and the club provides the drinks, napkins, dinnerware, etc.. (Some years a member even provided the plastic forks and spoons, plates, etc.) Other club members provide flowers for the tables and we use these to draw for prizes for the teachers. Others send money if they were unable to make a dish or participate in other ways.

Our club began the Teacher of the Month award of $ 50.00 to be used in their classroom two years ago. This will be an ongoing monthly drawing Once all the teachers have a turn to win the $ 50.00 prize to be used in their classroom we will start all over again.

In the month of April our Club chairs the Sweets Booth at the SCB Church/School Fair. Many members send sweets to sell in the booth as did many, many members of the Parish. Our Club members work the booth all weekend along with volunteers from the Parish. Our booth brings in about $ 3000.00 for the SCB Church/School.

This past school year our club bought a popcorn machine for the school to be used by all the school clubs and organizations.

Dr. H has been very helpful in guiding us as to where we are needed the most.

NOTE: We are currently trying to put together a cookbook as a fund raiser. We are seeking recipes from Grandparents, Parents, and friends to include in our cookbook. The children's names will be included with the recipes. (i.e., Recipe submitted by Jane Doe, Grandmother of Patrick Doe & Mary Doe.) Recipes can be sent to the school office -Attn: Grandparents' Club, or brought to a meeting, or we will come to your house and pick up the recipes if you need us to. Just give us a call. ________________________________________________________________________

The following are some frequently asked question regarding our club:

How much is the dues? The dues is $ 10.00 per year per family of grandparents.

Do I have to attend meetings? No. You are welcome at any meetings, but members are not required to attend.

If I join will people bother me to do things? No, we appreciate any help you can give to our fund raisers, etc, but it is not mandatory for club members to participate. If you don't want to be called in regard to participating in fund raisers simply write on the application that you are unable to participate.Your dues will help the club even if you can't participate in the club's activities.

What happens to the money I pay for dues? The club pays for all of the food, etc. for the Welcome back luncheon for the teachers, staff. We give the Teacher of the Month $ 50.00 each month. The club buys stamps, ink, etc. for the mailouts we do. Each year we talk to Dr. H and ask her for ideas of things we can do to help the school that year.
